The wild "island" of Bucharest

A month ago I discovered an amazing place in the heart of our beautiful capital in Romania, the Natural Park Vacaresti. What a surprise it was to see such a wild place in the middle of the most polluted city in this country!

Long story short, it used to be an abandoned site for a huge lake during our communism era, a place to throw trash, a place to live or hide for some "unwanted" people... But in 2016, a brave NGO managed to declare this area of 200 hectares as a protected natural area, thus the Natural Park Vacaresti was born!

The NGO team gathers several nature lovers, passionate about reptiles, plants, pollinators, nature protection & preservation and knowledge sharing. Today it is the only urban natural park in Romania and a place for education, for knowledge, for children and adults, for reconnecting to Nature and of course a place for hundreds of species of plants and animals!

It is essential to have this kind of places in our lives, where we can observe how Nature evolves without human intervention, it is simply astonishing and mesmerizing... As Pierre Rabhi (one of the fathers of agroecology) said once, "humans were made to admire this world", so enjoy the (online) visit!
